Dr Noora Ronkainen is a researcher and author who has spend a decade exploring how sport can bring meaning to people’s lives, and what cultural forces have alienated us from movement and our bodies.

It is probably no accident that existentialist writers did not include enjoyment, weight loss, winning or health in their description of ‘ultimate concerns’ of human existence. It is time for us to start considering what else sport contributes to human life beyond the commonly cited instrumental benefits of participation.
