Are children experiencing meaningless PE? What does meaningful PE look like? How can physical educators actively promote meaningful experiences in PE?

Our guests, Déirdre Ní Chróinín and Tim Fletcher have spent several years on developing and implementing a pioneering framework called Learning About Meaningful Physical Education (LAMPE).

The LAMPE project explores ‘whats’ and ‘hows’ of meaningful PE, with a very practical goal of educating PE teachers to prioritise meaningful experiences in physical education.

In the first part of the episode Déirdre and Tim, we explore the theoretical underpinnings and research findings from the project. We reflect together on how the idea of meaningfulness complements and extends other approaches, such as motivational theories, to understanding children’s experiences in PE and youth sport.

I was inspired and learned a lot from the discussion, I hope you will, too!

Dr Deirdre Ní Chróinín is a Senior Lecturer in physical education at Mary Immaculate College in Ireland; and Tim Fletcher is Associate Professor in physical education pedagogy in the Department of Kinesiology at Brock University.

Information about this exciting work and other collaborators in the LAMPE project can be found at meaningfulpe.wordpress.com.
